Programs for 2022-23

The branch’s main program for 2022-23 includes five local membership meetings, two joint meetings with the AAUW Northern District (in October and February), and our traditional holiday luncheon and end-of-season luncheon in the spring. The theme for our speakers’ program for the current year is “Equity: The Status of Women and Minorities.”

At our first meeting of the year, we celebrated the outstanding girls and women who received awards and scholarships sponsored by our branch. The attendees included high school juniors recognized for excellence in our STEM Achievement Awards, as well as the recipients of college scholarships  we have provided for years at local Trinity and Marymount universities. This year, we were pleased to acknowledge the winner of the additional scholarship we added at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina.


October 22, 2022

The first all-district meeting of the 2022-23 program year was held via Zoom and featured Gloria Blackwell, AAUW’s chief executive officer. Her presentation was followed by shorter presentations, with the Northern District and other districts holding “breakout” rooms for further discussions.


November 15, 2022
This monthly program, which was switched to Zoom due to inclement weather, featured as our guest speaker Barfonce Baldwin, executive director of the Tahirih Justice Center, a national non-profit organization that serves immigrant survivors fleeing gender-based violence.


December 3, 2022: Annual Holiday Luncheon
Our popular holiday event that combines socializing, branch business, and a dynamic speaker presentation was held at the River Bend Club, at 375 Walker Rd, Great Falls, from 11:30 a.m–2:00 p.m. This year our featured speaker was Terri McCullough, chief of staff for House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi. January 21, 2023
In a Zoom meeting on Saturday, January 21, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, we will observe Black History Month (which is in February, when our branch does not meet) by hearing from Alison M. Parker, who will discuss her 2020 book, Unceasing Militant: The Life of Mary Church Terrell. Parker is the History Department chair and the Richards Professor of American History at the University of Delaware. Terrell made historical inroads as a member of AAUW.


February 25, 2023
A Northern District meeting was held online from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon.


March 14, 2023
Our annual combined potluck dinner and business meeting was held at the McLean Community Center from 5-9:00 p.m. The meeting featured a presentation by the first-place winner of our local STEM Essay Contest, and recognized the recipients of endowed fellowships under AAUW Funds. This program was organized in honor of Women’s History Month.


April 18, 2023
The program for our regular monthly meeting, to be held from 7-9:00 p.m. at the McLean Community Center, will feature a group presentation by four representatives from community organizations we are looking to parner with as part of our new “philanthropy in action” initiative. May 20, 2023: Spring Luncheon
Our annual end-of-year luncheon, scheduled from 11:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at River Bend Club, at 375 Walker Rd, Great Falls, will feature as guest speaker U.S. Sen. Tammy Tammy Duckworth of llinois. we will also recognize the winner of the STEM Excellence Award given for an outstanding engineering project presented at the Fairfax County Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Recipients of the high school Student Recognition Inclusion Awards will also be honored. Our guest speaker will be announced later.
